Supreme Court Ruling, Same-Sex Marriage, and the Ten Commandments

Share

gay-marriageOn Wednesday, June 26, 2013, “The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a landmark victory for gay rights by forcing the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages in states where it is legal and paving the way for it in California, the most populous state … The rulings come amid rapid progress for advocates of gay marriage in recent months and years. Opinion polls show a steady increase in U.S. public support for gay marriage.”

Yes, America is “the land of the free” and “the home of the brave,” and its citizens do have inalienable rights; but this doesn’t negate morality. In other words, right is still right, wrong is wrong, and sin is still sin. “What is right?” millions ask today in an Age of Moral Confusion.

The Holy Bible’s answer is,

The Ten Commandments

This is a picture of the outside of the Supreme Court building. At the top, center-stage, is Moses and the Ten Commandments.

Read Exodus 20:1-17. The New Testament affirms the Ten Commandments to be “the law of righteousness” (see Romans 3:20; 7:7,12; 8:4; 9:31; James 2:10-12). “Written with the finger of God” (Exodus 31:18), the BIG TEN reveal the perfect standard of God Almighty. “God is love” (1 John 4:8), declares the Scriptures. As our Creator, God knows what is best for us. Then Paul affirmed, “By the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20).

In other words, the Ten Commandments teach us what is right, what is wrong, and what is sin; and they can’t be altered by any Supreme Court.

When God first “created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), He formed a “male” and a “female” (verse 27). He made “Adam” and “Eve” (Genesis 4:1) and united them in sacred marriage, “the man and his wife” (Genesis 2:25). “Marriage is honorable” (see Hebrews 13:4) says the Holy Book, “and the bed undefiled, but fornicators and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4). Notice, God will “judge.” When He judges, His judgment may not agree with “the laws of the land.”

Read the Ten Commandments carefully. They maintain the clear distinction between men and women, and uphold true marriage between a man and his wife. The 2nd commandment speaks of “fathers” and “children” (Exodus 20:5). Obviously “children” can only be born by a union of a man and a woman. The 4th Commandment tells parents that their “son” or “daughter” should not work on the Sabbath day (see Exodus 20:10). “Honor your father and mother,” thunders Commandment Five (verse 12).

Notice carefully: It’s not “Honor your father and father,” or “mother and mother,” but “your father and your mother.” Thus the 5th Commandment upholds traditional marriage. “Do not commit adultery,” states the 7th, requiring faithfulness to the marriage covenant. Finally, the 10th Commandment requires husbands not to “covet” their “neighbor’s wife” (Exodus 20:17). Thus the BIG TEN, “written the finger of God” on solid stone, uphold marriage between a man and woman, the honoring of one’s “father and mother,” and require a man to be faithful to his “wife,” based on God’s original plan.

In Old Testament times, God sounded this warning to men, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination to the Lord” (Leviticus 18:22). The New Testament echoes the same warning when describing practices among pagans: “For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one for another, men with men, committing what is shameful” (Romans 1:26,27). The Bible calls this “vile affections” (verse 26), and lists such acts among those “worthy of death” (verse 32). These Scriptures may not be politically correct, yet they speak the truth.

The gospel teaches that, in spite of humanity’s horrendous sins, God still loves the world (John 3:16), even the most sinful (see Romans 5:8), and that because of Jesus Christ’s death for our sins, and resurrection (see 1 Corinthians 15:3,4) full forgiveness is still available (see 1 John 1:9) for a little while longer. But men and women must repent (Luke 24:46,47), and give up their evil ways.

We live in frightening times. A bold departure from God’s original plan for men and women is being legalized by the United States Supreme Court, the highest judicial body in our land. Jesus Christ predicted, “As it was in the days of Lot … so shall it be at the coming of the Son of man” (Luke 17:28,30). Read Genesis 19 to discover what happened in “the days of Lot.”

Truly, “The great day of the Lord is near; It is near and hastens greatly” (Zephaniah 1:14).

“Can you not discern the signs of the times?” Matthew 16:3, inquires a merciful Savior who longs to rescue each of us from eternal oblivion.

I pray so, before its too late.
