Earthquake Strikes Indonesia Killing at least 14, Magnitude 6.4 – A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.4 hit Lombok region of Indonesia at nearly 7 a.m. local time on July 28, 2018. At least 14 people were killed and 160+ injured. The death toll could rise.

“There are 3,680 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles). Some 103,000 people are estimated to have felt very strong shaking… Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick with concrete floor and precast concrete frame with wall construction.

“The quake was followed by more than 60 aftershocks, with M5.7 the strongest one. Several landslides occurred during the quake, blocking roads and cutting off electricity and water supply to some homes.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster agency, said that most casualties occurred when victims were hit by debris and falling blocks of concrete.

Mount Rinjani National Park has been closed due to landslides.
